Our Lincoln Store: Our Story
In 1991, college seniors Cinnamon Dokken and Bryan Peterson
took a leap of faith and opened A Novel Idea Bookstore
with a stock of 2000 books. The store was located in an
unheated basement in an old warehouse on the edge of
downtown Lincoln. Shelves were made from scrap lumber. It
was a long, cold year--but
the shop managed to pay the bills and increase the stock.
In 1992, we moved to our
present location in downtown Lincoln.
We were thrilled to
have windows and heat! Katherine Bergstrom, a book lover
since birth, came to work in the shop in 1994. At that
time, Cinnamon became the sole proprietor and Katherine
became A Novel Idea Bookstore's in-shop manager.
The next several years were spent remodeling, with the help of family and friends. The
old shelving was replaced with shelves that have carved tops
and inset tiles. A beautiful oak and glass counter was
custom-built to house collectable books. Now, patrons
browse two floors of used, rare and out-of-print books and
enjoy a wide selection of hardcover and paperback fiction
and non-fiction.
In 2006, A Novel Idea Bookstore
expanded by opening a branch shop in Brownville, Nebraska.
Brownville is
right on the
Missouri River and is
Nebraska's
oldest town. With help from the Welsh "King of Books,"
Richard Booth,
Brownville has been designated an
international book town. A
Novel Idea Bookstore, Chapter
Two is open seasonally, Thursdays through Sundays, April to
December. Among other things, it offers Regional History,
Quilting & Crafts, Children's Books, and a selection of
Signed Books.
A Novel Idea Bookstore also
sells books
online through AbeBooks
and is a member of the
Independent
Online Booksellers Association.
